Elmar Theveßen began his career in TV journalism in 1991 at ZDF’s offices in the former German capital of Bonn, covering domestic politics and security issues. As ZDF’s North America correspondent based in Washington from 1995-2001, he reported not only on the Clinton administration, the internet boom, and various social and economic issues, but also on the bomb attacks in Oklahoma City, Atlanta, Kenya, and Tanzania. In May 2001 – after moving to Berlin – he worked for the investigative program “Frontal 21“, exposing al-Qaeda's German connections. After 9/11, he became ZDF´s security analyst, explaining the roots and actions of extremist movements and terrorist organisations around the world. Since 2007, Theveßen is the ZDF’s Deputy Editor-in-Chief and Head of News, running a news department of about 300 people in seven editorial teams.
